Big Brothers Big Sisters believes in investing in youth and connecting them with opportunities that help them reach their potential. That’s why we’re proud to be hosting the Big Spelling Bee in our region!
The Big Spelling Bee is a fun and educational event where students have an opportunity to improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary and build their confidence. The event also acts as a platform to raise awareness among schools, families and the general public of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ local mentoring programs.
According to research conducted by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, children and youth with a Big Brother or Big Sister (when compared to their peers without mentors) are:
·Twice as likely to have high academic achievement
·Two and a half times more likely to participate in extra-curricular activities (which, in turn, develops skills, builds strong relationships and a sense of belonging, and contributes to youth making better decisions)
Where these mentors don’t exist in a child’s life, Big Brothers Big Sisters steps in to help.
The Big Spelling Bee is a qualifier for the E.W. Scripps Spelling Bee that takes place annually in Washington, DC, and the winner from our local Bee also wins a trip to that event. By supporting the Big Spelling Bee as a sponsor, you will be recognized as a company that invests in youth in a way that has far-reaching benefits for our entire community.
·Students qualify for a space at the Big Bee by participating in a preliminary Bee held at their schools
