INSPIRE Leadership

Congratulations, Dr. Ramona Lumpkin.

Announcement - Ramona Lumpkin Resized

Dr. Ramona Lumpkin is a highly respected academic and administrative leader with over 25 years of experience in the educational field.  She is the former President and Vice-Chancellor of Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU), and prior to this was the first female principal at Huron University College. She holds a PhD in English Literature from the University of Kentucky and is a former Fulbright Scholar to England.

Ramona is very active in community life, most notably as a former Big Sister and Chair of the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters in London, Ontario. She is passionate about the education and advancement of women, and consistently works to support young women in reaching their potential. During her tenure at MSVU she worked closely with colleagues to strengthen their outreach and support for Indigenous students, including establishing the University’s first Aboriginal Student Centre.

Throughout her career, Ramona has been actively engaged in women’s studies, in advocacy on behalf of women’s issue, and in promoting the role of women in higher education.  One of Ramona’s biggest achievements was to raise $12 million to fund the construction of the Margaret Norris McCain Centre, the first new classroom building to be constructed at MSVU in over 40 years and the first on a Canadian campus dedicated to honouring and telling the stories of women.

When asked about her own mentor, Ramona said that she has been helped and supported by so many people throughout her life. One mentor who stands out is Davina Cloyd, her Little Sister in the BBBS program in Lexington, KY, who taught Ramona an extraordinary amount about being a decent human being during the years that they have known each other. They were matched over 30 years ago when Davina was 8 years old, and are still in touch today. Davina continues to inspire with her courage, humour, and personal strength.
