INSPIRE Public Service

Congratulations, Councillor Lindell Smith.

Announcement - Lindell Smith Resized

Lindell Smith is the District Councillor for Halifax Peninsula North. He has lived in the North End his entire life and is now raising his daughter here. Lindell has dedicated his life to fostering community. Beginning his public service career as a youth volunteer at the North Branch Library, he later became a youth ambassador, worked as a Youth Programmer, and then became a Community Library Assistant with a focus on working with teens.

Lindell is a co-founder of Center Line Studio, a non-profit recording studio for youth who want to express themselves through art and music. Along with other community leaders, they created “The One North End Project,” which aims to ensure that all residents benefit from rapid community growth by encouraging new hiring practices for local businesses and holding community engagement sessions.

Being elected as a municipal councillor is one of Lindell’s biggest achievements – he is the first African Nova Scotian councillor elected since 2000 and is also one of the youngest. He values being a voice for the community he was raised in and feels inspired and humbled that community members from all walks of life have placed their confidence in him.

Lindell has received many awards, including: The Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Education and Community Service; The Abby Bryant (humanitarian) Award of Excellence; and The Black Business Initiative’s Industry Development Award awarded by the African-Nova Scotian Music Association.

When asked about his own mentors, Lindell says he has had many people who have helped guide him through life, but that the neighbourhood he grew up in was his real mentor. Being able to see the positive and the negative every day has allowed him to know where he wanted to be and the community he hopes to help thrive.
