The Honourable Kevin S. Murphy was elected as MLA for Eastern Shore, and Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 2013. He is the first Speaker in any Canadian jurisdiction to have a permanent long term physical disability.  Kevin is a spinal cord injured quadriplegic as a result of a hockey accident in 1985.

Kevin graduated from Saint Mary’s University in 1992. He has a long history of advocacy work, and his combination of paid and volunteer roles have helped him to work towards the bigger picture for change for people with disabilities and to advocate for self-managed attendant care. He has held positions with the Canadian Paraplegic Association, the Rick Hansen Foundation, and as a self-employed Disc Jockey. Kevin loves working with people and is recognized by his peers for his positive outlook on life, and leadership within our community.

Hockey has always been Kevin’s passion, and continues to be as his son is now involved in the sport. Being a hockey dad is Kevin’s favourite job, and he loves attending games and supporting his son.

Kevin’s family was very supportive of him when he suffered a spinal cord injury, and continue to be throughout of all of his endeavors. His wife Stephanie, children Rachael and Jackson, parents, sister Kim, and his community have been instrumental in his achievements. Kevin says that his parents are mentors to him. They provided an environment that enabled he and his sister to be involved in activities, the community, and to appreciate the good things in life. They instilled in him the value of taking ownership of your actions and taught their children strong morals.
