Value Village in Halifax Relocates to New, Larger Space Due to Growing Popularity of Thrift Shopping - Continues Partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax to Benefit Community

BELLEVUE, WA – March 8, 2013 –Value Village, the national thrift chain with more than 315 locations across North America, is celebrating the re-opening of its Halifax store and their continued partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax. The celebration of the Halifax reopening will kick off on Thursday, March 14 with an 8:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Value Village management and representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax, and continue through Saturday, March 16. Grand reopening festivities of this new department-like thrift store will include the chance for attendees to win one of five $100 Value Village gift certificates.

“We’re excited to open our new location and provide the community with even more deals on quality clothing, home décor and more,” said Reg Chitty, the Halifax store manager. “Our customers in the Halifax area know they can rely on us for a great shopping experience, and the continued support we’re able to provide the local community makes us proud.”
At more than 38,000 square feet, the new, larger store makes it even easier for customers to shop for fun finds. With wide aisles and clean and tidy racks with merchandise organized by department, style and size, Value Village is no ordinary thrift store – it’s a place where people from all backgrounds can enjoy a unique selection, good deals and fun treasures in a department store-like atmosphere. The store carries more than 100,000 unique items on the sales floor at any time and stocks up to 10,000 gently used items every day, ensuring customers continuously find a refreshed assortment of quality, value goods.

Not only does Value Village offer an exciting shopping experience, but it also provides an easy way for customers to help the local community. Value Village was founded on the core idea of giving back to the community– and embraces that value by partnering with local nonprofits since 1954. The Halifax store’s continued partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax means Value Village pays the organization for every donated item, whether it makes it to the sales floor or not. When members of the Halifax community donate, they are not only giving their goods a second life, they are also turning their otherwise unused goods into sustainable revenue for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The revenue received is crucial in supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax’s mission to provide quality mentoring programs for young people, which contributes to building a healthier community in Halifax This revenue stream allows Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax to pair a child with a mentor or introduce a group of students to an in-school mentoring program and start life-changing relationships built on friendship, trust and empowerment.  Every year, the organization delivers meaningful programs to nearly 500 children and youth in the community.

“We’ve partnered with Value Village since 1998 and we’re thrilled to continue our relationship when the store reopens its doors,” said Carol Goddard, Executive Director. “The money we receive is so important in giving youth in the Greater Halifax area the opportunity to reach their full potential. We encourage everyone in the community get in touch with us to schedule a donation pick-up or drop off their gently used items at the store’s on-site Community Donation Centre or one of our donation bins located throughout Greater Halifax.”

While the new Halifax location continues to offer strong support for the local community, the network of stores across North America encourages a more sustainable environment overall. By coupling the sale of gently used, quality items with the responsible recycling of items that cannot be sold, Value Village, its customers, and its nonprofit partners keep more than 600 million pounds of unused goods from ending up in landfills. Throughout the years, Value Village has continued to inspire local communities to reduce their waste by reusing and recycling unneeded items, and has showcased that shopping thrift truly is one of the easiest ways to “go green.”

The new Halifax store and Community Donation Centre, located at 165 Chain Lake Drive, will be open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sunday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
