Halifax, Nova Scotia: December 14, 2008 -The seven Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across Nova Scotia have received the largest single donation made in the Province’s history. Nova Scotia Power announced it will donate $450,000 over the next three years to Big Brothers Big Sisters. The announcement was made today during Big Brothers Big Sisters holiday parties in seven locations across the province.
"Big Brothers Big Sisters is thrilled to receive such tremendous support from Nova Scotia Power. This contribution will have a substantial impact on agency growth and our ability to reach more children with our mentoring programs," said Margie Grant-Walsh, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou and AntigonishCounties. "So many children across the province will be impacted by this funding. Nova Scotia Power is helping us share the power of friendship and change kids' lives."
NS Power CEO Rob Bennett said the Board of Directors of Emera Inc. has made a conscious decision to allocate shareholders' money back to its various operating companies, including Nova Scotia Power, to invest in the communities they serve.
“Nova Scotia Power and our employees are committed to the communities where we live and work,” Mr. Bennett said. “The dedicated staff and incredible volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout our province make a real difference in the lives of young people. Our company is delighted to partner with them, and we are confident this contribution will help the agencies provide mentors for more Little Brothers and Little Sisters.”
NS Power employees are already actively supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters, from mentoring a young person as a Big Brother or Big Sister, to volunteering in the Bowl for Kids fundraiser, where the company matches funds raised by employees.
